John H. Slade wurde 1908 in Frankfurt am Main geboren und hieß ursprünglich Johann (Hans) Schlesinger. In seiner Jugend spielte er beim SC 1880 Frankfurt ziemlich erfolgreich Hockey - durfte aber als Jude 1936 nicht an den Olympischen Spielen in Berlin teilnehmen. Er emigrierte deshalb nach New York und fing dort als Laufbursche bei Bear Stearns an. Diese war seinerzeit noch eine kleine Brokerfirma mit nur 50 Angestellten. Nachdem Slade als US-Soldat noch einmal nach Deutschland zurückkam und ihm mit dem Hockey-Team der USA schließlich doch noch eine Teilnahme an Olympischen Spielen (1948 in London) ermöglicht wurde, widmete er sich danach seiner Karriere. Bis ins hohe Alter von 97 Jahren trug er maßgeblich dazu bei, dass Bear Stearns mit weltweit mehr als 13.000 Angestellten zu einer der bedeutendsten Investmentbanken wurde. Er wurde durch seine Erfolge an der Börse zu einer Legende und zur Verkörperung des Amerikanischen Traums. | |||

John H. Slade was born as Johann (Hans) Schlesinger in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, in 1908. In his youth he played hockey very well – but as a Jew he was not allowed to participate in the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin. He emigrated to New York and started to work as an errand boy for Bear Stearns, which in those times was quite a small business with only 50 employees. Slade returned to Germany as an US soldier and finally was able to join the 1948 Summer Olympics in London with the US hockey team. After that he dedicated the rest of his life to his business career. He was substantially responsible for Bear Stearns’ rise to become one of the most important investment banks worldwide (with more than 13,000 employees). With his success on the stock market he became a legend and embodies the American Dream. | |||
