The Bank of New South Wales was established in Sydney in 1817.
It was the first bank in Australia.
Edward Smith Hall was the first cashier
and secretary of the bank. The bank opened branches first throughout Australia and Oceania during the 19th and 20th century. It ac-
quired the Western Australian Bank in 1927 and the Australian Bank of Commerce in 1931. The bank merged with the Commercial
Bank of Australia to form Westpac Banking Corporation in 1982. Westpac is one of Australia’s Big Four Banks.
