| Die Feierlichkeiten zum 200. Geburtstag Pennsylvanias dauerten vier Tage und begannen am 25. Oktober 1882. Bereits zuvor wurde die Bi-Centennial Association of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania gegründet. Sie hatte mehr als 800 Mitglieder und bereitete die Feierlichkeiten vor. Pennsylvania war ursprünglich das Siedlungsgebiet von Irokesen und europäischen Kolonisten. 1681 begann die größte Immigration von Quäkern, als Karl II. von England ihnen ein großes Stück Land an der damaligen Westgrenze der besiedelten Gebieten überließ und William Penn zum Gouverneur des Gebietes ernannte. Am 27. Oktober 1682 wurde die späteren Hauptstadt Philadelphia gegründet. Sie war von 1790 bis 1802 die Hauptstadt der Vereinigten Staaten. Zudem wurde in Philadelphia am 4. Juli 1776 die Unabhängigkeitserklärung unterschrieben. Pennsylvania gilt als der geschichtsträchtigste Bundesstaat der USA und gehört zu den 13 Gründerstaaten der USA. | ||||
| The ceremonies in celebration of the bicentennial of Pennsylvania began on 25 October 1882 and took four days. The Bi-Centennial Association of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania had already been founded. It had more than 800 members and it prepared the celebrations. Initially Pennsylvania was an area where the Iroquois and European colonists settled. In 1681 a major immigration of Quakers began when Charles II of England ceded a huge piece of land at the former Western border of the populated area to them and appointed William Penn as governor. On 27 October 1682 the city of Philadelphia was founded. It was to become the State Capital and was also capital city of the United States from 1790 to 1802. Furthermore on 4 July 1776 the United States Declaration of Independence was signed in Philadelphia. Therefore Pennsylvania is considered to be the U.S. state most steeped in history. | ||||
