Die 1869 gegründete Bahnlinie eröffnete am 04.06.1870 die Strecke für den Verkehr. Ab 1895 betrieb die Gesellschaft einen regen Ausbau ihrer Bahnstrecken und wandelte sich nach und nach zu einem der größten Einsenbahnunternehmen Russlands. Daher firmierte das Unternehmen ab 1895 auch als Rybinsk-Eisenbahn. Gleichzeitig erwarb die Regierung die Nowgorod-Schmalspur-Eisenbahn und übergab diese an die Gesellschaft der Rybinsk-Eisenbahn. 1897 kam es zur Umfirmierung in Moskau-Windau-Rybinsk-Einsenbahngesellschaft.
