 1854 wurden im Hochland der Region Khomas (im Zentrum Namibias) reiche Kupfervorkommen entdeckt. Die Walwich Bay Mining Company wurde daraufhin im südafrikanischen Kapstadt gegründet und eröffnete ein Büro im namibischen Otjimbingwe. Dort sollte das Unternehmen die Vorkommen der Matchless Mine ausbeuten. Das abgebaute Material wurde dann von Otjimbingwe zum Hafen in der Walfischbucht (Walvis Bay) transportiert. Als 1860 die Vorkommen nur noch wenig ergiebig waren, wurde die Mine geschlossen und die Gebäude in Otjimbingwe verkauft.

 In 1854, rich copper deposits were found in the Khomas highlands, located in the centre of Namibia. The Walwich Bay Mining Company was founded in Cape Town (South Africa) and established its offices in the city of Otjimbingwe (Namibia). There it exploited the deposits at the Matchless Mine, which then were transported from Otjimbingwe to the port at Walvis Bay. By 1860, the copper deposits were yielding too little for further mining activities - so subsequently the mine closed down and sold all of its buildings in Otjimbingwe.
