1792 erwarb eine Gruppe französischer Investoren, unterstützt durch Schweizer Finanziers, 630.000 Acres Land in nördlichen Teil des Staates New York, in der Nähe der heutigen Stadt Carthage. Ziel war es, eine Kolonie für die französische Oberschicht zu errichten, die mit ihren Familien in Folge der Französischen Revolution geflohen waren. Zu diesem Zweck gründeten die Investoren die Compagnie de New-Yorck. Das Land nannten sie Castorland. Castor ist das französische Wort für Bieber. Die Gesellschaft errichtete zwei Städte. Am 28. Juni 1793 beschloss die Gesellschaft eigene „Jetons de presence“ (Medaillen) für ihre Kolonie auszugeben. Einige hiervon wurden 1796 in Gold, die meisten in Silber und Kupfer geprägt. Die Winter 1794/95 und 1795/96 waren sehr streng. Zahlreiche Siedler überlebten nicht, und auch viele Tiere starben. Zu guter Letzt stahl ein Heuerling (angeheuerter Helfer in der Landwirtschaft) am 28. Juni 1796 das Geld der Gesellschaft. Kurz darauf ernannten die Schweizer Bankiers in Bern einen neuen Vorstand für die Compangnie de New-Yorck. Der Zerfall der Kolonie ging allerdings weiter. 1814 erzwangen die Finanziers schließlich die Auflösung des Unternehmen und übernahmens die übrig gebliebenen Vermögensgegenstände. | |||

In 1792, a group of French investors, with financial backing of some Swiss creditors, purchased a 630,000 acre lot in upper New York State near the present day town of Carthage. They wanted to create a colony for upper class French families fleeing from the tribulations of the French Revolution. For this reason they founded the Compagnie de New-Yorck. The company named the land Castorland. Castor is the French word for beaver. The first settlers arrived in Castorland on 7 September 1793. They built two towns. The company decided on 28 June1793 to mint “Jetons de presence” for the colony. A few copies in gold and other in silver and copper were minted in 1796. The Castorland colony suffered greatly during the severe winters in 1794-5 and 1795-6, along with the human toll most of their domestic animals died. Following these disasters, on the night of June 28, 1796, a hired hand stole the company’s money. Soon thereafter the Swiss creditors in Berne appointed a new leader for the Compagnie de New-Yorck. The colony continued to deteriorate until it was forced to dissolve in 1814 with Swiss creditors seizing all remaining assets. | |||
