Mr. Doctor William Camac, who was very active in the local poli-
tics of Philadelphia in the 1850th, visited many zoological gar-
dens during his visits in Europe. He founded the Zoological So-
ciety of Philadelphia in 1859. But it had been impossible to reali-
ze the plans for 13 years, because of the civil war. The plan of a
zoological garden was reactivated in 1872. The city of Philadel-
phia mad a 13 hectare large area available next to the Fairmount
Parks, outside of the city. The zoo was opened on 1 July 1874. At
the beginning, the zoo had 282 animals, predominantly Australi-
an and North American species, but also lions, tigers, zebras, ele-
phants and antelopes. Because it was the first zoological garden
in the United States, more than 200,000 visitors came in the first
year of its existence. Several new buildings and improvements
were done after 1945. The zoo developed because of the breed of
rare animals and plants to one of the largest and most attractive
zoos in the world.

Dr. William Camac, der seit 1850 in der Stadtpolitik von Philadel-
phia sehr aktiv war, besuchte sehr viele Zoologische Gärten auf
seinen Reisen durch Europa. 1859 gründete er die Zoological So-
ciety of Philadelphia. Der amerikanische Bürgerkrieg machte je-
doch die Verwirklichung der Zoopläne 13 Jahre lang unmöglich.
Die Pläne für den Zoo wurden daher erst 1872 reaktiviert. Die
Stadt stellte ein 13 Hektar großes Gelände im Bereich des Fair-
mont Parks, außerhalb der Stadt, zur Verfügung. Bereits am 1.
Juli 1874 konnte der Zoo eröffnet werden. Er brachte es anfangs
auf 282 Tiere, darunter befanden sich australische und nordame-
rikanische Arten, aber auch Löwen, Tiger, Zebras, Elefanten und
Antilopen. Da dies der erste Zoo in den USA war, kamen bereits
im ersten Jahr mehr als 200.000 Besucher. Nach 1945 wurden
zahlreiche Neubauten und Instandsetzungen durchgeführt, so
dass sich der Zoo in der Folgezeit durch die Zucht von seltenen
Tieren und Pflanzen zu einem der größten und attraktivsten der
Welt entwickelte.
