Die Universität wurde 1829 per königlichem Dekret unter Schirmherrschaft von König George IV. und dem Herzog von Wellington gegründet. Die Wurzeln der medizinischen Fakultät, St. Thomas, gehen bis ins 16. Jahrhundert zurück. Der erste Unterricht wurde bereits 1561 dokumentiert. 1836 wurde das King’s zu einem der beiden Gründungscolleges der University of London. Das King’s verfügt über fünf Campus: den historischen Strand Campus im Zentrum von London, drei weitere Campus an der Themse (Guy’s, St. Thomas’ und Waterloo) in der Nähe und einen in Denmark Hill im Süden Londons. Darüber hinaus gibt es eine Niederlassung in Shrivenham, Oxfordshire, für die professionelle militärische Ausbildung, und eine weitere Niederlassung in Newquay, Cornwall, wo sich das Informationsdienstleistungszentrum befindet. The university was founded in 1829 by royal decree under the patronage of King George IV and the Duke of Wellington. The roots of the medical school, St. Thomas, go back to the 16th century. The first classes were documented as early as 1561. In 1836, King’s became one of the two founding colleges of the University of London. King’s has five campuses: the historic Strand Campus in central London, three other campuses on the Thames (Guy’s, St. Thomas’, and Waterloo) nearby, and one in Denmark Hill in south London. There is also a branch in Shrivenham, Oxfordshire, for professional military training, and another branch in Newquay, Cornwall, where the information services center is located. More broadly, King’s was one of the first of a number of institutions to emerge in the early 19th century as a result of the Industrial Revolution and major social changes in England after the Napoleonic Wars. | |||
