Die Wurzeln der Gesellschaft liegen in einem 1853 von Giovanni Ansaldo gegründeten Geschäft, das ab 1903 als Societa Anonima firmierte. Die Gesellschaft war der erste italienische Hersteller von Lokomotiven und produzierte zudem Turbinen und Dampfmaschinen. 1903 schloss sich das Unternehmen mit den britischen Ingenieuren W. G. Armstrong & Co. zusammen. Die Partnerschaft dauerte bis 1912. 1922 ging die Firma in Liquidation.
Giovanni Ansaldo formed the business in Genova in 1853. The company was changed to a Societa Anonima in 1903. It manufactured the first locomotives in Italy, and was a manufacturer of turbines and steam-engines. In 1903, the company teamed up with the British engineers W. G. Armstrong & Co. The partnership lasted until 1912. The company went into liquidation in 1922.
