Adrien Loir, Louis Pasteur’s nephew and his assistant, went to Australia from 1882 to 1883 as his representative, to take part to a competition organised by the Australian New South Wales Govt, which was offering a price of £25,000 to anyone who would discover a biologic method to eliminate the overpopulation of rabbits. But the Australian Gov. rejected Pasteur’s proposal to use chicken cholera and Pasteur then refused to study the proposed experiments. After being contacted by Arthur Devlin, a sheep upbringer, whose flocks of sheep had been struck by a disease called “Cumberland disease”, he (Adrien Loir) managed to realise a “Bacillus Anthraxis” culture from the blood of a contaminated sheep. The vaccine was a success as only the vaccined sheep survived. The Australian government immediately set off a laboratory to produce and commercialise the vaccine.
