The bank was incorporated as one of the very first Australian joint-stock-companies in 1826. It should be the counterpart to the New
South Wales Bank. Other than the New South Wales Bank the Bank of Australia did not allow that former prisoners became sharehol-
ders or employees. This was the reason why the bank got the nickname “the poor merino bank”.

Die Bank wurde 1826 in Sydney als eine der ersten australischen Aktiengesellschaften gegründet. Sie sollte ein Gegenstück zur New
South Wales Bank bilden. Anders als die New South Wales Bank ließ die Bank of Australia keine ehemaligen Strafgefangenen als An-
teilseigner und Mitarbeiter zu. Daher bekam sie schnell den Spitznamen „the poor merino bank“.
