Geschichte
 Die Direktoren der Erie Rail Road Company planten den Bau eines großen, prächtigen Bahnhofes in New York City. Ziel war es, Personen- und Frachtverkehr gleichzeitig abwickeln zu können. Das hierfür passende Gelände fand man im Long Dock Areal in Jersey City (New Jersey). Das Gelände lag am Hudson River gegenüber von Manhattan. Neben dem Bahnhof war der Bau von Docks und Piers geplant. Um das Projekt zu realisieren gründete die Erie Railroad 1856 eigens eine Tochtergesellschaft, die Long Dock Company. Zudem baute und betrieb die Gesellschaft einen Tunnel durch Bergen Hill. Ab 1859 pachtete die New York and Erie Rail Road Company die Anlagen der Long Dock Company und die Pavonia Ferry Company. Damit hatte die Gesellschaft ihr großes strategisches Ziel erreicht: Sie war auf Augenhöhe mit dem Dauerrivalen Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt und dessen New York Central and Hudson River Rail Road Company angekommen.
Geschichte (Englisch)
 The directors of the Erie Rail Road Company planned to build a large, splendid railway station in New York City. They had the goal to process both freight and passenger traffic simultaneously. The company found a suitable area, the Long Dock area, in Jersey City (New Jersey). The area was on the Hudson River, opposite of Manhattan. Beside the railway station the company planned to build docks and piers. To realise this project, the Erie Railroad founded a subsidiary in 1856: the Long Dock Company. The company furthermore built and operated a Tunnel through Bergen Hill. The Erie Rail Road Company leased the assets from the Long Dock Company, and from the Pavonia Ferry Company. Thus the company reached their strategic goal: it was at eye level with the eternal rival New York Central and Hudson River Rail Road Company of Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt.
