Friedrich Wöhlert worked for the Neue Berliner Eisengießerei until 1836. He joined the company of August Borsig thereafter. Wöhlert participated in the construction of the first locomotive until he changed his job and joined the Preußische Seehandlung in 1841. He had been only for two years there, until he founded his own factory under the name Maschinenfabrik und Eisengießerei F. Wöhlert at Chausseestraße. He manufactured steam engines, cranes, axes, iron constructions, and heavy machine tools. He delivered his first locomotive in 1848. The locomotive construction was always only a side job, because the competition by Borsig, and of Berliner Maschinenbau-AG BMAG, vormals L. Schwartzkopff was heavy. The focus of the company was the production of machine tools and iron constructions. Wöhlert changed his company to a joint-stock-company under the name F. Wöhlert'sche Maschinenbau-Anstalt und Eisengießerei AG in 1872. The company did not survive the economic crises at the end of the 1870th, which followed after the Founder’s Boom. Despite the situation, in 1880, the company took over the Elbinger AG für Fabrikation von Eisenbahnmaterial, which had been bankrupt until 1875. The company itself decided to went into liquidation on 25 June 1883. The company was one of the biggest swindle foundations of the Founder’s Boom of 1870 to 1873. Irregular practices became public even during the IPO. The unsold shares were offered as cheap as chips to potential shareholders. The journalist Otto Glagau wrote : “The management of the company hopes that there will be heavy frost and snowfall, because this will prolong the inventory of the material which is located outdoor.”
