Vor dem Bau des Suez Kanals hat die Britische Regierung nach einer Verbindung in Richtung Indien gesucht, ohne dabei ganz Afrika umrunden zu müssen. 1836 finanzierte sie daher eine Expedition um herauszufinden, ob es möglich ist, Schiffe auf dem Euphrat von Syrien bis zum Persischen Golf fahren zu lassen. In den 1850er Jahren wandte man sich dann dem Gedanken zu, die Verbindung mit einer besseren Eisenbahnverbindung herzustellen. Gleichzeitig wuchs die Macht Russlands in dieser Region und gefährdete die Position der Briten. In dieser Zeit reifte der Plan für die Euphrates Valley Railway, die eine Verbindung zwischen Mittelmeer und dem Golf herstellen sollte. Eine Idee bestand darin, bis zum Euphrat eine Eisenbahnlinie zu bauen, um dann per Schiff auf dem Euphrat weiterzukommen. Es gab aber auch Pläne, auf der gesamten Strecke ein Schienennetz zu verlegen. Dann kam aber der Deutsch-Osmanische Vorschlag, die Bagdadbahn zu bauen (welche später errichtet wurde), dazwischen. Von jüdischer Seite fand das Projekt Unterstützung. Der Vorschlag bestand darin, dass die Euphrates River-Strecke von Palestina bzw. Syrien mit jüdischen Bautrupps errichtet werden könne. Diese sollten sich dann dort niederlassen, und das Land diesseits und jenseits der Linie in Mesopotamien könne jüdisches Gebiet werden. Angesichts dieser ungewisser Aussichten und vagen Versprechungen war es verwunderlich, dass für das Projekt eine Gesellschaft gegründet wurde und auch tatsächlich Aktien platziert worden sind. Bei dem hier angebotenen Scrip Certificate handelt es sich um das älteste bisher bekannte Wertpapier aus dem Osmanischen Reich. | |||

Before the construction of the Suez Canal, the British government tried to find a route towards India without having to circumvent all of Africa. Therefore, in 1836, they financed an expedition with the goal of finding out whether it was possible to let ships go from Syria to the Persian Gulf by way of the Euphrates. During the 1850ies the concept of a better railway connection came into focus. Simultaneously the growing power of Russia in this region was felt to be a threat to the British. During this time the plan matured for the Euphrates Valley Railway that was to create a connection between the Mediterranean and the Gulf. One idea was to build a railway line up to the Euphrates and then continue on the river by ship. However, there also existed plans for laying tracks along the entire distance. Then the German-Ottoman proposition to build the Baghdad line (which was constructed later-on) appeared on the table. The project found support on the Jewish side. According to the proposition, Jewish construction crews would be building the Euphrates river line from Palestine/Syria. On termination of the project, these crews should settle in the region and the land on both sides of the line in Mesopotamia could become Jewish territory. Given these uncertain perspectives and vague promises, it was surprising that a company was founded and shares were actually placed for the project. The Scrip Certificate offered here is the oldest security paper from the Ottoman Empire known up to now. | |||
