Historie (Angličtina) |
The Rotterdam Zoo has slowly developed into one of the finest European Zoos. The original "Diergaarde", situated on railway property on the outskirts of town, was the tiny private garden of two rail employees who kept a few domestic and exotic animals as a hobby. In 1854, they opened the garden to visitors for an annual subscription of 10 guilders. Within a year they had formed, with over 500 other enthusiasts, a zoological society in association which the City Council of Rotterdam. On March 27, 1857, they established the stock company Rotterdamsche Diergaarde with the capitalization of 300.000 guilders and appointed P. Henric Martin, a weil known wild animals trainer, as the first director of the zoo, which included a botanical garden as weil as a zoological facility. At first entry was restricted mainly to members and shareholders and the public was allowed to visit the zoo for only a few days a year. Due to rapid development expansion was imperative. Due to the expansion of the city, however, it was not possible on the old site and a 16 hectare plot was obtained as a new setting. A completely new zoological and botanical garden was designed and construction began in 1938 on Blijdorp field. The Second World War delayed the finishing of the building. The old zoo was completely destroyed on May 1Oth, 1940, when Rotterdam was attacked by a German air blitz. The new zoo at Blijdorp was fortunately spared severe damage and a part of it could be opened in July 1940 as Blijdorp, Diergaarde Rotterdam. After the society decided the public could visit the zoo free of charge, the official opening followed on December 6th of the same year. In 1948, the City Council of Rotterdam began paying an annual subsidy for the Diergaarde. Today, 70 % of the expenditures of the plant are covered by the city's subsidies. On the hundredth anniversary of it's foundation, in 1957, the society’s achievements were recognized by Royal decree. Since then it carries the official title The Royal Society of the Rotterdam Zoo.
