Das rasante Wachstum von New York führte schon bald nach der Stadtgründung im Jahr 1612 zu einer dichten Besiedlung weit über Manhattan Island hinaus. East River und Hudson River bildeten ein Hindernis hin zu den neuen Vierteln in Brooklyn und Jersey City. Zunächst wurde der Verkehr mit mehr als 400 Fährverbindungen bewältigt. Eine große Erleichterung brachte die East River Bridge nach Brooklyn. Der erste Tunnel ging erst kurz vor der Jahrhundertwende als Hudson River Tunnel der New York Central Railroad tatsächlich in Betrieb. Versuche einen Tunnel zu bauen gab es freilich schon wesentlich früher: Die American Submarine Tunnel Company plante bereits Mitte des Jahrhunderts einen kombinierten Fußgänger- und Straßentunnel, wie die prächtige Vignette zeigt. Seit Jahren sind nur 2 oder 3 Exemplare bekannt. | |||

New York grew fast shortly after his foundation in 1612. People settled not only in Manhattan Island. But the East River and the Hudson River were obstacles to the new quarters in Brooklyn and Jersey City. The first tunnel was built through the Hudson River Tunnel Company, there were much earlier plans to build a tunnel: The American Submarine Tunnel Company planed in the mid of the 19th century a combined tunnel for pedestrians and for other traffic. This tunnel is shown on the certificate. Only two or three copies are known for years. Very rare! | |||
