 Die Bedeutung von Jacob H. Vanderbilt, dem Bruder des legendären Commodore Vanderbilt, wird oftmals unterschätzt. Im Gegensatz zum Commodore, der ein genialer Denker war, war Jacob ein hervorragender Praktiker. Er arbeitete sich von seinem ersten Job als Schiffslotse bis hin zum Presidenten der Staten Island Rail-Road hoch. Der Staten Island kommt besondere Bedeutung zu: Sie war die erste Eisenbahninvestition der Vanderbilts gewesen. Die Linie ging von der Schiffsanlegestelle der Vanderbilt-Linie aus und transportierte die Passagiere auf der vor New York gelegenen Halbinsel Staten Island. Durch diese Kombination hat der Commodore das erste größere integrierte Transportsystem in New York geschaffen.

 Original signature of Jacob H. Vanderbilt as president. The significance of Jacob H. Vanderbilt, the brother of the legendary Commodore Vanderbilt, is often underestimated. Contrary to the Commodore, who was a genius, Jacob was an excellent practical person. He worked himself up from his first job as ship pilot until president of the Staten Island Rail-Road. There is something special about the Staten Island Rail-Road: it had been the first railroad investment of the Vanderbilts. The line started at ship pier of the Vanderbilt-line and transported passengers on the peninsula of Staten Island located in front of New York. The Commodore had created the first large integrated transportation system in New York with this combination.
