Andrew W. Mellon gilt neben John P. Morgan als der dominierende amerikanische Großfinanzier des ausgehenden 19. Jahrhunderts. Sein Vater hatte das Bankhaus T. Mellon & Sons gegründet, das später unter Andrews Leitung als Mellon National Bank eine der wichtigsten amerikanischen Banken war. Bedeutend war auch die von Mellon initiierte Gründung der Aluminium Co. of America. Die Alcoa ist auch heute noch der weltgrößte Aluminiumproduzent. Auch bei der Gründung der Gulf Oil wirkte der Bankier mit. Der breiten Öffentlichkeit wurde Mellon erst bekannt, als er von Präsident Harding zum amerikanischen Finanzminister ernannt wurde. In dieser Funktion beeinflusste er entscheidend die amerikanische Wirtschaftspolitik vor der Weltwirtschaftskrise. Richard B. Mellon (1858-1933) war ein Bruder von Andrew Mellon. Innerhalb der Mellon-Familie galt Richard als Finanzexperte. So war er auch einer der Teilhaber der Mellon National Bank, deren Vorsitz er später übernahm. William L. Mellon (1868-1949), gilt als Gründer der berühmten Gulf Oil, deren Vorstandsvorsitzender er für mehr als 40 Jahre war. Die Gulf Oil wurde 1984 von der Standard Oil of California für den damals sagenhaften Übernahmepreis von umgerechnet 18 Milliarden US-$ gekauft. | |||

Andrew W. Mellon is considered next to J.P. Morgan the dominant American high financier of the late 19th century. His father had founded the T. Mellon & Sons banking house, which later, as Mellon National Bank, under Andrew's leadership became one of the most important banks. The founding of the Aluminium Company of America by Mellon was very significant. Alcoa is still the world's largest producer of aluminium today. The bank also participated in the founding of Gulf Oil. Mellon first became known to the broader public when he was named by President Harding as American Secretary of the Treasury. In this role he decisively influenced American economic policy before the global Depression. Richard B. Mellon (1858-1933) was the brother of Andrew Mellon. Within the Mellon family Richard was the financial expert. He was one of the shareholders of the Mellon National Bank. Later he was President of the bank. William L. Mellon (1868-1949) is known as the founder of Gulf Oil. He was CEO of Gulf Oil for more than 40 years. Gulf Oil was taken over by the Standard Oil of California for the amazing amount of 18 Billion US-$ in 1984. | |||
