Carl von Linde (1842-1934) was trained in the machine and locomotive works Borsig in Berlin. He moved to the Bavarian capital Munich
in 1866, in order to take a leading position at the new founded locomotive company Krauss & Co. (Krauss Maffei). At the age of 26 years,
Carl von Linde presented his locomotive at the Paris World Trade Fair and won a gold medal. A group of brewery owners and his boss
Georg Krauss convinced Carl von Linde to found his own company (Gesellschaft für Linde’s Eismaschinen AG) in 1879. Linde developed
cooling machines, which were used mainly in breweries, slaughterhouses and ice production companies. The Linde AG is one of the
leading companies in the branch of cooling technologies nowadays. Linde also formed the Linde Air Products Company in the USA in
1907, a company that passed through US Government control to Union Carbide in the 1940s and to form today’s Praxair.

Carl von Linde (1842-1934) hatte in der Maschinen- und Lokomotiv-Fabrik Borsig in Berlin gelernt. 1866 wechselte er in die bayerische
Landeshauptstadt, um dort eine leitende Funktion bei der neu gegründeten Lokomotivfabrik Krauss & Co. (Krauss Maffei) zu überneh-
men. Im Alter von gerade mal 26 Jahren brachte er es auf der Pariser Weltausstellung mit seiner ersten Lokomotive zur Goldmedaille.
Eine Gruppe Brauereibesitzer sowie sein Chef Georg Krauss überredeten Linde schließlich 1879 zur Gründung der o. g. Gesellschaft.
Die von Linde entwickelten Kältemaschinen werden vorwiegend in Brauereien, Schlachthöfen und Eisfabriken eingesetzt. Die Linde AG
ist noch heute eine der führenden Firmen im Bereich der Kältetechnik. 1907 gründete Carl von Linde in den USA die Linde Air Pro-
ducts Company. In den 1940er Jahren kam diese erst unter staatliche Kontrolle und dann zu Union Carbide. Diese besteht heute als
Praxair weiter.
