The Illinois State Zoo and Amusement Company was one of a range of parks built at the turn of the century in the USA which were constructed, financed, and controlled by joint stock companies. The zoo and park in Springfield, Illinois was built by a company from Chicago. In 1906 the Illinois State Zoo and Amusement Company was established to build and manage an amusement park, in which the exhibition of animals was to play a secondary role. A restaurant, dance hall, switchback railway (roller coaster), and merry-go-round were among the attractions, with a camel, a pair of buffaloes, some deer and a few monkeys’ cages on exhibition. The gigantic switchback railway proved the most important attraction of the park, at the time the only one of its kind in Illinois. The shares were issued on January 12th, 1906. Charles M. Williams, president and Charles P. McLaughlin, secretary were among the signers. The park was successful for over four decades and was closed in 1950/1951.
