In 1799, a theatre with a permanent ensemble settled in Lübeck in for the first time. It replaced the changing travelling theatres. Theatrical performances and operas took place regularly. The desire for a modern and representative building grew in 1857. Under leadership of members of the senate and rich merchants a joint-stock-company was incorporated to build a new theatre. It was constructed according to the plans of a railway construction director named Benda, and finally opened on 3 March 1858. There were several saloons beside the stage. Tightened security regulations and the growing displeasure of the audiences led to the closing of the theatre on Easter 1905. The new theatre was opened on 1 October 1908; it was built in Jugendstil and is one of the largest in Schleswig-Holstein nowadays.
