In 1799,
a theatre with a permanent ensemble settled in Lübeck in for the first time. It replaced the changing travelling theatres. Thea-
trical performances and operas took place regularly. The desire for a modern and representative building grew in 1857. Under leader-
ship of members of the senate and rich merchants a joint-stock-company was incorporated to build a new theatre. It was constructed ac-
cording to the plans of a railway construction director named Benda, and finally opened on 3 March 1858. There were several saloons
beside the stage. Tightened security regulations and the growing displeasure of the audiences led to the closing of the theatre on Easter
1905. The new theatre was opened on 1 October 1908; it was built in Jugendstil and is one of the largest in Schleswig-Holstein nowa-
days.

1799 trat an die Stelle der wechselnden Wanderbühnen erstmals ein stehendes Theater mit einem festen Ensemble. Regelmäßig fanden
Schauspiel- und Opernvorstellungen statt. 1857 wuchs der Wunsch nach einem zeitgemäß ausgestatteten und repräsentativen Gebäude.
Unter Federführung einer von Mitgliedern des Senats und wohlhabenden Kaufleuten gegründeten Aktiengesellschaft kam es zu einem
Theaterneubau. Die Pläne dafür lieferte der Eisenbahnbaudirektor Benda. Am 3. März 1858 wurde der Theaterneubau eröffnet. Er ent-
hielt neben der Bühne auch zahlreiche Gesellschaftsräume. Verschärfte Sicherheitsbestimmungen und der wachsende Unmut der Be-
sucher führten dazu, dass das Theater Ostern 1905 geschlossen wurde. Am 1. Oktober 1908 eröffnete das neue Theater seine Pforten.
Das im Jugendstil erbaute Theater ist heute eines der größten in Schleswig-Holstein.
