Next to the Rockefellers, Flagler and Rogers,
John D. Ar-
chbold
(1848-1916) is considered a dominating personali-
ty in the history of Standard Oil. Archbold had once defeated the
South Improvement Company. However, only a little later he
supported his former opponent in the attempt to monopolise the
entire oil industry. After 1882, Archbold’s influence on the trust’s
fate increased more and more. He always maintained an uncon-
ditional loyalty to John D. Rockefeller, especially in delicate situa-
tions. For that reason he succeeded Rockefeller as head of the
world’s largest oil trust in 1911, after the foundation of the Stan-
dard Oil Company of New Jersey.

John D. Archbold (
1848-1916) gilt neben den Rockefell-
ers, Flagler und Rogers als die dominierende Persönlich-
keit in der Geschichte der Standard Oil. Archbold hatte einst die
South Improvement Company besiegt. Doch nur wenig später
unterstützte er seinen ehemaligen Gegner bei dem Versuch, die
gesamte Ölindustrie zu monopolisieren. Nach 1882 wurde der
Einfluss von Archbold auf die Geschicke des Trusts immer grö-
ßer. Er hielt John D. Rockefeller besonders in heiklen Situationen
immer bedingungslos die Treue. Daher wurde er auch 1911,
nach der Gründung der Standard Oil Company of New Jersey,
Rockefellers Nachfolger an der Spitze des größten Öltrusts der
Welt.
