 Die Bank wurde am 18.07.1884 gegründet. Sie übernahm dabei die Geschäfte der gleichnamigen Vorgängerbank, die bereits 1851 gegründet worden war und ihre Geschäftsräume in der Threadneedle Street in London hatte.
