Paraguays Bevölkerung hatte schwer unter dem Tripel-Allianz-Krieg von 1864-1870 zu leiden. Hier kämpfte Paraguay gegen einen Dreierbund aus Brasilien, Argentinien und Uruguay. Die Regierung setzte in der Folgezeit auf Einwanderung und bemühte sich dabei vor allem um Deutsche. Hieraus resultiert 1884 die Gründung der Südamerikanischen Colonisations-Gesellschaft. Nach einigen Vorerkundungen entstand 1887 mit der Nueva Germania die erste Privatkolonie in Paraguay und die erste für Deutsche zugelassene Siedlung. Die Südamerikanische Colonisations-Gesellschaft erwarb in Paraguay 46.850 Hektar Grund. Der Viehbestand setzte sich aus 4.026 Rindern, 501 Kälbern und 82 Pferden zusammen. Durch abnorme Witterungsverhältnisse im Jahre 1899 beklagte die Gesellschaft einen hohen Verlust. 1.715 Stück Rindvieh gingen verloren, worauf im Jahr 1900 die Liquidation der Gesellschaft beschlossen wurde. Die Nueva Germania existiert hingegen heute noch. |

Paraguay suffered after the Paraguayan War (War of the Triple Alliance or the Great War), fought from 1864 to 1870 between Paraguay and the Triple Alliance of Argentina, the Empire of Brazil, and Uruguay. The government encouraged immigrants in the following time. It focused mainly on Germans. This was the reason why the Südamerikanische Colonisations-Gesellschaft was incorporated in 1884. After some surveys the Nueva Germania was created in 1887. It was the first private colony in Paraguay and the first colony, Germans were admitted to. The Südamerikanische Colonisations-Gesellschaft bought 46,850 hectare land in Paraguay. It owned 4,026 cattle, 501 calves and 82 horses. Because of abnormal weather conditions in 1899, the company had a big loss. 1,715 cattle were lost. This was the reason to liquidate the company in 1900. The Nueva Germania still exists. |
