Alex. A. Aarons / Vinton Freedley [13 Stück]

Geschichte
Alex.
Geschichte (Englisch)
Alex. A. Aarons was producer, theatre owner and operator. In the early 1920s he was responsible for a drama named "The Hole in the Wall". Further he produced "For Goodness Sake", a Broadway musical comedy with the collaboration of the famous composer George Gershwin. In 1923 Aarons started a cooperation with Vinton Freedley, being an actor and then a producer too. In the period following they produced further six Gershwin musicals. "Girl Crazy" was performed from 1930 to 1931 - and one of the songs ("I Got Rhythm") let Ethel Merman start her long career and became an evergreen. Most probably Aarons und Freedley founded a new company for each of their plays and musicals. It's really curious that the companies' names are combinations of parts of their names or later the name of the play. Further Aarons and Freedley built their "Alvin Theater" (today: "Neil Simon Theatre"), which opened in 1927. But, unfortunately not every musical was a success: While financially stricken by the Great Depression a Gershwin musical ("Pardon My English") flopped in 1933. As a result Aarons and Freedley went bankrupt, which led Aarons to retire. Freedley got back on his feet and continued producing musicals with composer Cole Porter in the 1930s and 1940s. He became President of the "Episcopal Actors' Guild" (1942-1968) and the "Actors' Fund of America" (1959–1969).
