William Henry Vanderbilt (1821 - 1885) war der Sohn des legendären Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt. William fing seine Karriere in einem Bankhaus an der Wall Street an. Gesundheitliche Gründe verschlugen ihn jedoch später wieder nach Staten Island. Dort war er zunächst als Farmer tätig. Diese unternehmerischen Fähigkeiten überzeugten seinen Vater. Daher übertrug er ihm die Leitung der Staten Island Rail-Road Company. Später setzte ihn sein Vater als Vizepräsident bei der Harlem-Linie ein. Bald war William Chef der wichtigsten Hudson-Linie. Nach dem Tod des Commodore übernahm William H. Vanderbilt die Herrschaft über das Familien-Imperium. Cornelius Vanderbilt II. (1843 - 1899) war der älteste Sohn von William Henry Vanderbilt. Er folgte seinem Vater als Chairman der New York Central and Michigan Central. Zudem war er von 1886 bis 1899 President der New York & Harlem. Die Eisenbahn wurde am 03.08.1881 gegründet. Sie ging von Terminal der Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad in Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania) nach Connellsvalle (Pennsylvania). Ab 01.01.1884 wurde die Strecke für die Dauer von 999 Jahren an die Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad Company verpachtet. | |||

William Henry Vanderbilt (1821 - 1885) was the son of the legendary Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt. William commenced his career in a bank company in Wall Street. Health reasons, however, took him away back to Staten Island. Afterwards, he was working as farmer. These entrepreneurial skills convinced his father. That is why he handed over the management of the Staten Island Rail-Road Company to him. Later on, his father appointed him vice-president in the Harlem-Line. Soon enough, William was head of the most important Hudson-Line. After the death of the Commodore, William H. Vanderbilt took over the power of the family empire. Cornelius Vanderbilt II. (1843 - 1899) was the oldest son of William Henry Vanderbilt. He succeeded his father as Chairman of the New York Central and Michigan Central. Furthermore he was the president of the New York & Harlem from 1886 until 1899. The railway company was founded on 3 August 1881. It ran from the terminal of the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad in Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania) to Connellsvalle (Pennsylvania). The line was leased for 999 years to the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad Company from 1 January 1884 on. | |||
