Historie (Angličtina) |
The firm Tynemouth Aquarium and Wintergarden Comp. had been dissolved before their planned aquarium and wintergarden opened. The board of directors had included illustrious figures such as the Duke of Northumberland, Earl Grey (generally given credit for the fine tea flavored with bergamot that is named after him), Earl Percy, Earl of Durharn and Scarborough, Lord Eslington and Sir W. C. Trevely. The scientist W. A. Lloyed, who was employed at the old zoological garden in Hamburg, was employed as an advisor. The subscription of company shares was a great success and more than 250 investors were found who were willing to help raise the estimated initial capital of £ 50.000. But it was clear from the start that the money would be most likely insufficient for the construction of the extravagantly expensive building. Before the facility was finished the initial capital was increased to £ 88.500. The architect John Norton from London, famous for his blueprints of country houses, and Philip E. Masey, whose experience included the construction of aquariums, were responsible for planning the Tynemough Aquarium. The building was truly a work of art. Beyond the region the aquarium and wintergarden were famous for its luxurious facilities, constructed in ltalian and French renaissance style with broad staircases and beautiful columns. The company built an aquarium and wintergarden, a sea museum, a dancing-hall, and several exclusive restaurants. The facility finally opened on August 28th, 1878, after a years delay. The festivities were lavish, further worsening the debt Ioad. After the first month it became clear that the extravagance and over abundance of the facility had its sad counterpart in the paucity of visitors. The directors tried to attract more visitors with a six penny day and other events which did, in fact, attract more visitors, but Iosses continued to mount. The 1879 season was a particular disaster with stormy, wet weather providing no incentive for a holiday trip to the north coast. In December 1879, a scant 18 months after opening, the company declared bankruptcy. The aquarium was auctioned off in the beginning of 1880. The reasons for this total failure included the aquariums location on a lonely stretch of the north coast between Tynemouth and Cullercotes, the Iack of interest in the locals in the natural history of their own region, and the confusing nature of the collection itself as weil as the way in which it was presented. Today this historical venue is in very poor condition. The arcades are crumbling and the interior in desperate need of renovation. The house now holds a tavern, a snackbar, and a roller-skating rink.
