Die Dampfschifffahrtsgesellschaft wurde am 6. Dezember 1855 als Stettiner Dampfer-Compagnie gegründet. Ab 1862 lautete die Firma dann Neue Dampfer-Compagnie, Stettin und ab 1923 wieder Stettiner Dampfer-Compagnie. Das Unternehmen lief alle wichtigen Hafenplätze in der Ostsee, der Nordsee im Mittelmeer sowie im Schwarzen Meer an. Zu den angelaufenen Städten zählten unter anderem Lübeck, Danzig, Königsberg, Reval, St. Petersburg, Stockholm und London. Die Tochtergesellschaft Deutsche Orient-Linie unterhielt regelmäßige Linien in den Orient. Der Betrieb beschränkte sich auf feste, regelmäßige Linien. Besonders interessant war der Bäderverkehr: Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts fuhren viele Berliner mit dem Zug nach Stettin und von dort aus mit den Dampfern in Seebäder wie Swinemünde, Misdroy, zur dänischen Insel Bornholm oder zu den Inseln Rügen und Usedom. Letztere war bei Kaiser Wilhelm II., Bankiers wie Delbrück und Oppenheim sowie vielen Kleinindustriellen besonders beliebt. Während des Ersten Weltkrieges ruhte der Betrieb, nur einige Dampfer fuhren im Küstenverkehr. Im Ersten Weltkrieg gingen sieben Dampfer verloren, vier weitere mussten aufgrund des Versailler Vertrages abgetreten werden. 1923 erreichte die Flotte mit 38 Dampfern ihren Rekordstand. Der zunehmende Wettbewerb durch die Eisenbahn setzte der Linie zu, und so beschloss die Generalversammlung vom 29. November 1930 die Liquidation der Gesellschaft. Die Aktionäre erhielten eine Liquidationsquote von 73 Prozent. | |||

The steam ship company was incorporated under the name Stettiner Dampfer-Compagnie on 6 December 1855. The name was changed to Neue Dampfer-Compagnie in 1862 and again to Stettiner Dampfer-Compagnie in 1923. The touched all important ports of the Baltic Sea, North Sea, Mediterranean and Black Sea. It served cities like Lübeck, Gdansk, Königsberg, Tallinn, St. Petersburg, Stockholm and London. The subsidiary Deutsche Orient-Linie had regular lines to the Orient. The company operated only on fix routes and served them regularly. Especially interesting was the traffic to the sea bathes. At the end of the 19th century, many Berliner travelled with the railway to Stettin and from there with the steamer to the sea baths like Sinemünde, Misdroy, to the Danish island Bornholm or to the islands Rugia and Usedom. Usedom was very popular. German emperor Wilhelm II, Bankers like Delbrück and Oppenheim as well as many industrialists visited the island. During the First World War the company stopped traffic almost. Only a few steamers were used in the coast traffic. During World War I the company lost seven steamers and, after the war, they had to give away four more. But the fleet recovered again and reached a high of 38 steamers in 1923. The growing competition by railway put pressure on the company. The general assembly decided the liquidation of the company on 29 November 1930. Shareholders got a liquidation ratio of 73 per cent of the nominal value. | |||
