George W. Tiedeman (1840 - 1935) war einer der einflussreichsten Männer in Georgia und ein sehr bekannter "Leader" in Amerika. Er wurde als Sohn des Kaufmanns Otto Tiedeman geboren, der 1840 von Deutschland nach South Carolina auswanderte. 1887 zog es den dann 26jährigen George nach Savannah, wo er im Lebensmittelgroßhandel seines Bruders zu arbeiten begann. Innerhalb kürzester Zeit war er selbst Teil der Unternehmerschaft der Stadt und begann sich der Politik zuzuwenden. Von 1907 bis 1913 war er dann ein sehr fortschrittlicher und vorausschauender Bürgermeister von Savannah: Er brachte elektrisches Licht in die Stadt und elektrifizierte die ersten Feuerwehrfahrzeuge in den USA überhaupt. Tiedeman war auch ein großer Automobilliebhaber und darüber hinaus der Schwiegervater von Roy Chapin, dem Gründer der Hudson Motor Car Company. So war er nicht nur Mitglied im Savannah Automobile Club, sondern sorgte auch dafür, dass die Rennen des Großen Preis der USA nach Savannah kamen. 1917 zog sich Tiedeman aus dem Lebensmittelhandel zurück und fokussierte sich auf die Finanzierung anderer geschäftlicher Projekte. Im Jahr 1933 wurde er schließlich Aufsichtsratsvorsitzender der Liberty National Bank & Trust Co. in Savannah. | |||

George W. Tiedeman (1840 - 1935) was one of the most influential men in Georgia and a very well-known leader in America. He was born as son of merchant Otto Tiedeman, a grocer who had emigrated from Germany to South Carolina in 1840. In 1887, the 26-year-old George moved to Savannah to begin work at his brother's wholesale grocery business. After he quickly became part of Savannah's business community, he found himself being interested in politics. From 1907 to 1913, George W. Tiedeman had been a forward-thinking Mayor of Savannah, who brought electric lights to the city and motorised the fire department vehicles (which were the first in the United States). While he loved automobiles and was the father-in-law of Hudson Motor Car Company founder Roy Chapin, he was not only involved with the Savannah Automobile Club, but also brought the American Grand Prize races to Savannah. In 1917, Tiedeman retired from his grocery business and focused on financing other business projects. In 1933, he was appointed Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Liberty National Bank & Trust Co. of Savannah. | |||
