 Die Great American Tea Company wurde 1859 als Versandhandel für Tee und Gewürze gegründet. 1870 kommt die Umfirmierung in Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company. Bereits 1876 war die Gesellschaft mit 100 Läden der größte Lebensmitteleinzelhändler der USA. 1979 beteiligte sich die Tengelmann-Gruppe an der A&P und begann damit ihre Auslandsexpansion. Heute macht die amerikanische Supermarktkette mit 79.000 Mitarbeitern einen Jahresumsatz von elf Milliarden Dollar und gehört neben obi (4,5 Milliarden Euro Umsatz) und Plus (7,7 Milliarden Euro Umsatz) zu den Säulen der Tengelmann-Gruppe.

 The Great American Tea Company was founded in 1859 as a mail order business for tea and spices. In 1870 the name was changed to Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company. With 100 stores the company was already the largest foods retailer of the USA in 1876. In 1979 the Tengelmann group took a stake in A&P and thus started its expansion abroad. Today the American supermarket chain with 79,000 employees has annual sales of eleven billion dollars and next to obi (4.5 billion Euros in sales) and Plus (7.7 billion Euros in sales) is one of the pillars of the Tengelmann group.
