Storia (Inglese) |
Original signature Peter A. Widener as President (affected by punching). Wideners career started as a meat supplier to the Federate Army during the Civil War. When the war was over, Widener became the city treasurer of Philadelphia. In addition, he became partners with William L. Elkins and together they developed the tramway system in Philadelphia and then also in Pittsburgh, Baltimore and Chicago. Widener invested the revenues in US Steel and American Tobacco. At the end of the 19th century he created an art collection that is considered one of the most attractive collections in the US. | |||
