 Robert Means Thompson (1849 - 1930) schlug zunächst die Offizierslaufbahn in der US Navy ein und wurde in Folge dessen zum Präsidenten der Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers sowie der Navy League. Zudem wurde der Zerstörer USS Thompson (DD-627) nach ihm benannt. Nachdem er die Navy im Jahr 1871 verlassen hatte, nahm er zunächst ein Jurastudium auf. Er interessierte sich jedoch immer mehr für Unternehmen im Bereich Bergbau und Verhüttung, mit denen er letztlich auch sein Vermögen verdiente. Somit wurde er auch als Wirtschaftsmagnat sowie als Philanthrop bekannt, der u. a. das Amt des Präsidenten der American Olympic Association übertragen bekam.

 Robert Means Thompson (1849 - 1930) was a United States Navy officer, later also President of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers and President of the Navy League. He is the namesake of the destroyer USS Thompson (DD-627). After resigning from the Navy in 1871, he first studied law, but later became interested in mining and smelting enterprises, by which he earned his fortune. Finally he was not only known as a business magnate, but further as a philanthropist and President of the American Olympic Association.
