The plan to built a railway from Portland (Maine) to Ogdensburg (New York) came up in the 1860th. Therefore the Portland and Ogdensburg Railroad Company was founded in Maine and New Hampshire. It started to build a line from Portland to Lunenburg in 1869. Three more railway companies were founded in Vermont between 1864 and 1867. They should build the lines in Vermont. The Essex County Railroad Company got a concession for the segment between Lunenburg and St. Johnbury. The Montpelier and St. Johnsbury Railroad Company planned to build a railway from Montpelier to St. Johnsbury and the Lamoille Valley Railroad planned to build a branch railway from the Montpelier & St. Johnsbury Railroad in West Danville to Swanton. The plan to extend the railway from West Danville to Montpelier was later discarded because the city of Montpelier was not interested in this project. The line was leased to the Boston and Maine Railroad Company between 1887 and 1925.
