and with coat of arms.
The Real Compañia Guipuzcoana de Caracas was the Spanish
response to the English and Dutch trading companies which
frequently had ships loaded with goods coming home, also
from the Spanish province Venezuela. A group of aristocrats
from Guipuzcoa suggested the creation of a shipping company
to the Spanish King Philipp V. The envisaged company was to
transport Spanish products from Northern Cantabria and the
port of San Sebastian to Venezuela and on the way back also
call at Seville and Cadiz in order to provide the two cities with
product from Venezuela, cocoa in particular. By royal decree as
of September 25, 1728, the province Guipuzcoa was assigned
the trade rights to export products of the kingdom and import
cocoa. The moment of creation of the Real Compañia Guipuz-
coana de Caracas. It was the first larger trading company in
Spain operating as a stock corporation. Applications for shares
came in lethargically, only half a million pesos were issued.
However, soon the capital could be increased to 2.25 millions
reales. In 1752, the capital was raised up to 3 millions reales de
Vellón. In 1776, the capital was increased further to 4.5 milli-
ons reales de Vellón. In 1730, the company had expanded to
Venezuela and, two years later, it received the monopoly for the
trade from Caracas to Spain. When the company was assigned
the exclusive monopoly in 1742, it moved headquarters from
San Sebastian to Madrid. Business went well until in 1776 the
war with England and the ensuing declaration of free trade har-
shly afflicted the corporation. In 1785, it was assumed by Real
Compañia de Filipinas.

Die Real Compañia Guipuzcoana de Caracas war die spanische Ant-
wort auf die englischen und holländischen Handelsgesellschaften,
welche ständig vollbeladene Schiffe mit Waren - auch aus der spani-
schen Provinz Venezuela - nach Hause brachten. Eine Gruppe von
Aristokraten aus Guipuzcoa schlug dem spanischen König Philipp
V. die Schaffung einer Schifffahrtsgesellschaft vor. Die angedachte
Gesellschaft soll von Nordkantabrien und dem Hafen von San Se-
bastian aus spanische Produkte nach Venezuela transportieren und
auf den Rückweg sollen auch Sevilla und Cádiz angelaufen werden,
um die beiden Städte mit Produkten aus Venezuela, vor allem mit
Kakao, zu versorgen. Mit königlichem Dekret vom 25.09.1728 wird
der Provinz Guipúzcoa das Handelsrecht verliehen, Produkte des
Königreichs zu exportieren und Kakao zu importieren. Die Geburts-
stunde der Real Compañia Guipuzcoana de Caracas. Sie war die
erste größere Handelsgesellschaft Spaniens, die als Aktiengesell-
schaft firmierte. Die Aktienzeichnung verlief schleppend, lediglich
eine halbe Million Pesos wurden platziert. Doch bald konnte das
Kapital auf 2,25 Millionen Reales aufgestockt werden. 1752 kam
es zur Erhöhung auf drei Millionen Reales de Vellón. 1776 wurde
das Kapital weiter auf 4,5 Millionen Reales de Vellón erhöht. 1730
expandierte die Gesellschaft nach Venezuela und zwei Jahre später
erhielt sie das Handelsmonopol für den Handel von Caracas nach
Spanien. Als die Firma 1742 das exklusive Handelsprivileg erhielt,
verlegte sie ihren Sitz von San Sebastian nach Madrid. Die Ge-
schäfte florierten, bis im Jahr 1776 der Krieg mit England ausbrach
und die im Anschluss erfolgte Erklärung des freien Handels der
Gesellschaft gewaltig zusetzte. 1785 kam es zur Übernahme durch
die Real Compañia de Filipinas.
