The car manufacturer was founded by Shanghai Automotive In-
dustry Corporation as an independent company in 1984. It beca-
me an official Joint-Venture between the two companies Volks-
wagen AG and Volkswagen (China) Investment Co., Ltd. in 1988.
Today, the company manufactures between 500,000 and 700,000
cars under the Volkswagen and Škoda marques. VW owns 40 per
cent of the shares of Volkswagen Shanghai. 50 per cent are ow-
ned by SAIC Motor (formerly Shanghai Automotive Industry
Corporation) and 10 per cent by Volkswagen (China) Invest.
