 Im Jahr 1851 eröffnete der Handwerker Samuel Smith in London ein kleines Geschäft, in dem er Uhren und andere feinmechanische Instrumente herstellte. Sein Sohn Samuel junior trat bald in die Fußstapfen seines Vaters und begann auch ein Geschäft in dieser Branche. Dazu gründete er 1899 die S. Smith & Son Ltd., welche zunächst Uhren für Autos produzierte. Die Autoindustrie entwickelte sich gerade zügig und der “Smiths Speedometer”, der erste britische Tachometer, fand 1904 reichlich Absatz. Aber auch in der Luftfahrt tat sich einiges, weshalb Smith auch in die Produktion von entsprechenden Instrumenten einstieg. 1914 wurde das Unternehmen dann geteilt: Eine neue Firma mit dem Namen S. Smith & Sons (Motor Accessories) Ltd. übernahm die Tätigkeit als Autozulieferer, während die S. Smith and Sons Ltd. entsprechend den Anfängen als Juweliergeschäft und Uhrmacherei fortgeführt wurde. In den Folgejahren erweiterte S. Smith & Sons (Motor Accessories) Ltd. seine Produktpalette auch noch um Autopiloten für Flugzeuge und übernahm die Mehrheit an der Henry Hughes & Sons Ltd., wodurch man dann auch die Marine mit Instrumenten versorgen konnte. Zu Beginn des Krieges im Jahr 1939 war Smith & Sons somit eines der wohl am besten aufgestellten Unternehmen überhaupt.

 In 1851 a craftsman named Samuel Smith opened a shop in London. His business were watches, clocks and other precision instruments. Learning from his father Samuel junior started the same business at his own. Therefore he founded S. Smith & Son Ltd. in 1899. First producing watches for cars Smith became more and more dependent of the increasing car industry. Starting with the development of the first British speedometer (“Smiths Speedometer”) in 1904 the company further went into business with aircraft instruments. In 1914 the company was divided: A new company named S. Smith & Sons (Motor Accessories) Ltd. took over the motor accessory business, while S. Smith and Sons Ltd. continued as jewellers and clock and watch makers. In the following years the S. Smith & Sons (Motor Accessories) Ltd. extended the range of products by automatic pilots for aircrafts, acquiring the major part of Henry Hughes & Sons Ltd. the company further entered the field of marine instruments. Therefore Smith & Sons seems to have been well-placed for production during the war in 1939.
