William Billy Crapo Durant (1861-1947) schloss sich 1885 mit Josiah Dallas Dort zusammen und erwarb die Coldwater Road Cart Company, die in kürzester Zeit zum führenden Hersteller von durch Pferde gezogener Wagen wurde. 1904 wechselten Durant zur Buick Company und wurde später deren President. 1908 waren Reo, Buick, Maxwell-Briscoe und Ford die vier größten US-Automobilhersteller. Es gab Bestrebungen, diese vier Firmen zu fusionieren. Das Vorhaben scheiterte jedoch, brachte Durant aber auf eine Idee: Am 16.09.1908 gründete William C. Durant mit einem Kapital von 2.000 Dollar General Motors of New Jersey (GM). Es gelang ihm, in nur zwölf Tagen mehr als zwölf Millionen Dollar für sein Vorhaben zu akquirieren. Dann kaufte General Motors Buick durch Ausgabe von Aktien und sechs Wochen später übernahm GM die Olds Corporation of Landsing. Später übernahm Durant die in Schwierigkeiten geratene Oakland Company und schließlich die Cadillac Motor Car Company. In gerade einmal 18 Monaten hatte General Motors die Mehrheit bei fast 30 Autoherstellern. Nach Streitereien stieg Durant 1920 aus und gründete 1921 Durant Motors. Die Folgen der Weltwirtschaftskriese beendeten Durants Karriere im Automobilsektor. | |||

The bond represented 4.75 per cent of the base capital and was issued in the name of Catherine L. Durant (wife of William C. Durant). It is signed in the back by William C. Durant as the President. Only once up to this date has a share with the original signature of the GM founder been offered. An absolute rarity! In 1885 William Billy Crapo Durant (1861-1947) joined Josiah Dallas Dort in order to purchase the Coldwater Road Cart Company, which within a short time developed into the leading manufacturer of cars pulled by horses. In 1904 Durant transferred to the Buick Company and a while later became its president. In 1908 Reo, Buick, Maxwell-Briscoe and Ford were the biggest car manufacturers in the US. There were efforts to merge those four companies. However, the plan failed, but it sparked an idea with Durant: on September 16, 1908, William C. Durant founded General Motors of New Jersey (GM) with assets of 2,000 dollars. Within twelve days he managed to acquire more than twelve million dollars for his project. Then General Motors bought Buick by issuance of shares and six weeks later GM assumed the Olds Corporation of Landsing. Later-on Durant took over the troubled Oakland Company and finally Cadillac Motor Car Company. Within only 18 months General Motors had obtained the majority in almost 30 car manufacturers. Due to quarrels Durant dropped out in 1920 and in 1921 founded Durant Motors. The consequences of the world economic crisis terminated Durants career in the automobile industry. | |||
