 Charles Crocker (1822-1888) zog 1849, angezogen vom Goldrausch, gemeinsam mit seinem älteren Bruder nach Kalifornien. Doch im Minengeschäft hatte Crocker wenig Erfolg. Er wandte sich schon nach kurzer Zeit den Gemischtwaren zu, trat den Republikanern bei und lernte Collis Porter Huntington kennen. Crocker gründete eine Bauunternehmung und erhielt auch umgehend einen Auftrag für den Eisenbahnbau. Crocker zeichnete sich durch unkonventionelles Handeln aus, so setzte er einmal auf Grund eines Arbeitermangels chinesische Arbeiter ein und heuerte diese direkt in China an. Crocker war zudem der erste Teilhaber der Central Pacific, der die gesamte Strecke bereiste.

 The contract for the sale of land contains the original signature of Charles Crocker. Charles Crocker (1822-1888), drawn by the gold rush, in 1849 came to California with his brother, but Crocker had little success in the mining business. After a short time he turned to a general store, joined the Republican Party, and got to know Collis Porter Huntington. Crocker founded a construction firm and promptly received an order for railway building. Crocker excelled at unconventional deals, and he immediately set out to solve the problem of a worker shortage by signing up Chinese workers directly in China. Crocker was also the first owner of the Central Pacific to travel the entire route.
