Die massive Auswanderung europäischer Juden nach New York führte im letzten Viertel des 19. Jahrhunderts dazu, dass besonders die Krankenhäuser in der Bronx total überfüllt waren. Nach der Erfahrung eines armen Freundes entschied sich Jonas Weil - reicher Immobilienmogul und prominenter Bürger sowie eines der Gründungsmitglieder der Jewish Theological Seminary - eine Institution zu erschaffen, die den kranken Armen bessere Hilfe ermöglichen sollte. Er gründete die Lebanon Hospital Association und spendete aus eigener Tasche mehr als 10.000 Dollar. Freunde und andere Bürger taten es ihm gleich - und das Lebanon Hospital wurde 1890 gebaut. Mit dem 1911 errichteten Bronx Hospital wurde es schließlich Ende der 1950er Jahre zum Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center zusammengeschlossen. 1971 wurde es dann zum Universitätsklinikum des Albert Einstein College of Medicine. | |||

A massive immigration of European Jews to New York in the last quarter of the 19th century caused especially hospitals located in the Bronx being totally overcrowded. Due to experience with a poor friend Jonas Weil - a wealthy real estate mogul, prominent citizen and founding member of the Jewish Theological Seminary - decided to establish an institution enabling the sick poor people to receive better care. He founded the Lebanon Hospital Association and donated more than $10,000 of his own money. While friends and other citizens were following the Lebanon Hospital was built in 1890. The Bronx Hospital was founded in 1911, by the end of the 1950s both were merged to the Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center. In 1971 it became the primary teaching hospital of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. | |||
