 Der Zoo wurde 1851 auf Veranlassung des belgischen Königs Leopold I. als Konkurrenz zum Antwerpener Zoo gegründet. 1878 übernahm die Stadt den Zoo. Die Aktien wurden in 3 % Anleihen der Stadt umgewandelt. Dies ist rückseitig dokumentiert.

 The zoo was founded in 1851. The initiative was made by the Belgian king Leopold I. It was thought as a competitor to the zoo in Anvers. In 1878 the city government took over the zoo. The shares were exchanged into 3 % City Bonds. There is a stamp for this exchange at the back of the share certificate.
