Charles Dow (1851-1902) gründete zusammen mit Edward Jones die Firma Dow Jones & Company. 1889 brachte er das Wall Street Journal heraus. Doch vielen Anlegern ist er vor allem auf Grund des von ihm entwickelten Aktienindexes bekannt: Am 3. Juli 1884 veröffentlichte Charles Dow im Customers Afternoon Letter erstmals sein Marktbarometer. Damals waren neun Eisenbahn-Aktien und zwei Industriewerte enthalten, darunter Titel wie die Louisville & Nashville und die New York Central Railroad. Im Mai 1896 publizierte Charles Dow dann erstmals einen Durchschnitt, der nur Industrietitel enthielt. Von den damaligen Firmen ist heute nur noch eine im Index einzige enthalten, und zwar das an der Marktkapitalisierung gemessen zweitteuerste Unternehmen der USA, General Electric. | |||

On the back the certificate displays the spelled-out name of Charles Dow as well as his original signature as a trustee. Together with Edward Jones Charles Dow (1851-1902) founded the Dow Jones & Company. In 1889 Dow released the Wall Street Journal. However, mainly the stock index he developed made him known to many shareholders. On July 3, 1884, Charles Dow publicized his market barometer for the first time in Customers Afternoon Letter. At the time nine railway shares and two industrial shares were enclosed, including titles such as the Louisville & Nashville and the New York Central Railroad. In May 1896 Charles Dow for the first time published an average that contained only industrial titles. Of the companies included then, only one is still on the index today and that, as measured by market capitalization, is the second-most expensive enterprise of the USA, General Electric. | |||
