Geschichte (Englisch) |
After Dr. H. Schläger, Mayor of Hanover, had seen the zoological gardens in London, Berlin and Frankfurt he proposed a zoo in Hanover. The city leased a chosen area around the Hanebuth Block to the new founded Aktien-Verein – for a symbolic rent of 1 Thaler per year. It was planned to place 2,500 shares of 20 Thaler each. After a short time shares with a total value of 23,000 Thaler were subscribed and the foundation meeting took place on 25 February 1863. Although the placement of further shares was more difficult, the zoo opened at 4 May 1865. In 1971 the zoo was acquired by the Hanover Municipality, which changed the legal form to a GmbH in 1993. |
