Historie (Duits)
Historie (Engels)
The foundation of this mortgage bank was initialized by the Bank of Egypt in 1908 in the course of the speculation fever (and the collapse of the Cassa di Sconto) which had caused the crisis of 1907. Mainly French capital poured into the country, and England, of course, could not be the odd one out. It is interesting to note here that the company was fully subject to British law, although its head quarters were located in Cairo. However, also Belgian banks (with French participation) as well as German banks opened branches or independent banks in the country, primarily in Alexandria and Cairo. Land speculation was in full bloom, because within a few years the prices in the delta region quadrupled, in Upper Egypt they increased tenfold.
