 Zunächst war es Liverpool, das zu einem großen Markt für Rohbaumwolle heranwuchs. Doch die Manchester Cotton Association erkannte die Bedürfnisse vor Ort und setzte alles daran, auch in Manchester einen entsprechenden Markt zu entwickeln. In Folge dessen wurde - neben dem Import von Baumwolle aus Ägypten - auch eine direkte Schiffsverbindung zwischen Manchester und New York eingerichtet. Die dort eingesetzten Dampfschiffe kamen von den Reedereien White Star und Lamport and Holt.

 First of all Liverpool became a great market for raw cotton. The Manchester Cotton Association recognized the needs and was strongly developing a local market too. Beside importing cotton from Egypt a direct service of steamships was organized between Manchester and New York. Companies involved here were White Star and Lamport and Holt lines.
