 Winfield Scott Stratton (1848-1902) entdeckte am 4. Juli 1891 die Independence Ader in der Nähe von Victor in Colorado. Die Independence Ader war eine der ergiebigsten Goldadern, die je auf der Erde entdeckt worden sind. Zwischen 1893 und April 1899 förderte Stratton insgesamt rund 200.000 Unzen Gold aus der Independence Mine. Stratton wurde dadurch bereits 1894 zum ersten Millionär im Cripple Creek. 1900 veräußerte Stratton die Mine für zehn Millionen US-Dollar an die Vernture Corporation of London. Diese gründete Stratton’s Independence, Limited und brachte die Mine ein. Anschließend wurden die Aktien an der Londoner Börse platziert.

 Winfield Scott Stratton (1848-1902) discovered the Independence Lode near Victor, Colorado on 4 July 1891. The Independence Lode was one of the richest gold mines ever located on earth. Between 1893 and April 1899, approximately 200,000 ounces of Gold were removed from the Independence Mine. Stratton became the Cripple Creek district's first millionaire in 1894. In 1900, Stratton sold the Independence mine to the Venture Corporation of London for US-$ 10 million. The Venture Corporation incorporated the property as Stratton’s Independence, Limited and sold the shares on the London stock exchange.
