 Samsonite wurde 1910 von Jesse Shwayder als Shwayder Trunk Manufacturing Company gegründet. Einen seiner ersten Koffer nannte er Samson, woraus 1941 der Markenname Samsonite entstand. 1966 wurde dann die Firma auch umbenannt. Die Firma wurde 2007 von CVC Capital übernommen. Nachdem die Einzelhandelsdivision 2009 Insolvenz anmelden musste, ging die Firma 2011 in Hongkong erneut an die Börse.

 Jessy Shwayder founded the company as Shwayder Trunk Manufacturing Company in 1910. One of his first suitcases was named Samson, which led to the trade mark Samsonite in 1941. The whole company was renamed to Samsonite in 1966. In 2007, CVC Capital took over the company. Only two years later, the retail division went into bankrupcy, but the remaining company was relisted at the Hongkong Stock Exchange in 2011.
