Herbert Magoun started his career as an officer in the Suffolk Savings Bank in Boston, Massachusetts. In 1875, he became vice-treasurer and while the bank was moving into a new building in Tremont Street in 1904 he was already treasurer. Most probably after resignation from the bank job in 1907, he continued to run a carriage factory. Magoun was one of the proprietors of the Boston Athenaeum (one of the oldest and most distinguished independent libraries) and treasurer of the West Medford Lyceum and Library Association. Anyway, he seems to have been very engaged in supporting culture.
