 Der Hamburger Alfred Beit (1853-1906) reiste 1875 angezogen vom Diamantenrausch nach Cape Colony aus. Der Finanzier nahm schnell wichtige Positionen bei vielen Diamantenminen ein, unter anderem bei De Beers. Die Firma war eine britische Gesellschaft, die das Gebiet von Südrhodesien erschloss und verwaltete. Am 15.10.1889 erhielt die Gesellschaft einen Schutzbrief der englischen Regierung, der ihr fast vollständige Selbständigkeit in der Verwaltung von Matabele-, Maschona- und Manikaland gewährte. Am 01.05.1899 wurde die zweite Eisenbahnlinie des Landes, zwischen Beira und Salisbury, eröffnet.

 This British company developed and managed the territory of Southern Rhodesia. On October 15, 1889, the company received a protection letter from the British government which granted them almost complete independence in the management of the Matabele, Mschona and Manika regions. On May 1, 1899, the second railway line of the country was opened between Beira and Salisbury.
