 Die Great Western wurde als Breitspurbahn (7 Fuß, 2,134 Meter) von Isambard Kingdom Brunel gebaut. Nach einem harten „Kampf der Spurbreiten“ wechselte die Gesellschaft in der Zeit bis 1892 zur Normalspur. 1923 stieg die Gesellschaft zu den „Big Four“ der britischen Eisenbahngesellschaften auf. Sie behielt ihren Namen von 1835 bis zur Verstaatlichung im Jahr 1948, ein Rekord, der nur von der Baltimore & Ohio Railroad übertroffen wird.

 The Great Western was built by Isambard Kingdom Brunel using a broad gauge (7 feet; 2.134 metres). After a bitter "battle of the gauges" it converted to standard gauge over a period up to 1892. In 1923 it became one of the "Big Four" British railways. It retained its name from 1835 till nationalisation in 1948, a world record beaten only by the Baltimore & Ohio.
